Sheldon’s branch of the YFA reopened its doors to the young people of
Sheldon station area. The young people where recruited from a local
secondary school, and were aged between 13-14 years with different abilities
and back grounds. The group meet on Wednesday evenings, where they During the twelve weeks the young people completed a workbook that is accredited by the Open College Network and were given the opportunity to visit Fire Control as well as taking part in a search and rescue scenario at Handsworth Fire House, where they were able to exercise their team work and communication skills. The attendance of the young people during the training programme was extremely good.
Towards the end of the training
programme all the young people expressed an interest in staying on as full
time YFA members, however we explained that we had many young people within
our station area desperate to take part in the YFA and experience life in
the fire service and that it was only fair for us to offer this experience
to as many young people as possible.
