Visit to Handsworth Firehouse

On Saturday 5th May 2007 the YFA at Sheldon visited Handsworth firehouse, which is located at Handsworth Community Fire Station, Handsworth Birmingham.

The YFA group were first shown some basics on wearing a Breathing apparatus set which firefighter would normally wear when entering a smoke filled building but for this exercise the group would not be needing them. They were also instructed on a how to do thorough search patterns and how to be able to follow a guideline and retrace their steps back out to fresh air.

The firehouse

Also based at Handsworth is a dedicated unit which can reproduce the effects of a flashover in a small sized room. This is one of the most dangerous scenarios a firefighter could come across.
