All Firefighters need to wear Fire Kit
whenever they attend an emergency call, this comprises of :
Fire helmet. This has an
attached safety
visor to protect eyes and a skirt to protect the neck. Although there are newer designs in use by other brigades our helmets still
provide excellent protection.
Fire tunics. Tunics in use in the West
Midlands provide different areas of protection. They need to be fire
retardant, water proof and reflective. There are numerous pockets
incorporated into the design to carry the various items of personal kit
detailed later.
Leggings. Are made to the same standard as
the Fire tunics.
Boots. There are two types, leather and
rubber. Leather boots being more comfortable are the prefered typeto wear,
however rubber boots are needed for chemical incidents.
Smoke hoods. As worn by racing drivers are
used to protect the head , neck and ears from the effects of heat and
flames.
Leather gloves. To protect hands from sharp
objects and as they have a rubber lining keep hands dry and warm. Slippery
when wet.
PERSONAL KIT

blows of the whistle are used
