What the fund does

The Fire Services National Benevolent Fund was set up in 1943, initially to help the widows and orphans of firefighters who lost their lives during World War II.  Since then the Fund has grown enormously and is now a registered charity providing support to serving and retired firefighters and their families who are in need.

Help is given to any member of a firefighter’s family who is experiencing any sort of difficulties, whether they be financial, physical or emotional.

Last year we saw a great increase in the number of people benefiting from the Fund either through therapy, convalescence, retirement or hardship grants.  With your support, this year we hope to help even more.

Therapy

Jubilee House Therapy Centre in Cumbria is a unique, purpose-built rehabilitation and therapy facility developed by the Fund for the benefit of Fire Service personnel and their dependants.  Every admission receives an individual treatment, developed for their particular needs.

Convalescence

The Fund maintains two centres for convalescence, both purchased for theJubilee House convenience and tranquility of their locations.  Marine Court in the seaside resort of Littlehampton has its own gymnasium and many local amenities nearby, including the beautiful South Downes.  Harcombe House Convalescent Centre in  Devon stands in 300 acres of beautiful woodland amongst fishing lakes and nature trails.

Retirement & Sheltered Housing

The Fund also provides self-contained retirement bungalows at Eamont Park near Jubilee House and warden sheltered flats at Marine Court, both of which are available to rent or buy for former fire service personnel or their partners to enjoy their retirement in peace and security.

Hardship Grants

The Fund provides financial assistance to past and present Fire Service personnel and their dependants when they suffer bereavement, misfortune, illness or hardship.  Support is given in the form of grants and awards, with the aim of maintaining quality of life.  There are currently 1500 firefighters or their dependants receiving financial grants and other benefits which cost around three million pounds a year.

Can you Help?

There are lots of ways you can help, from straightforward donations and Deeds of Covenant to Give As You Earn and Legacies.  Whatever gift you send will be much appreciated and will help us continue the support we offer to Fire Service personnel and their families.
