It was Monday afternoon and Sheldon Blue Watch were training using their hose
and ladders at the Fire Station.
Meanwhile, Jimmy, who had just arrived home from
school, was in
his bedroom doing homework when he heard the loud beeping sound of the
smoke detector in his hall. Jimmy's mum had left a cigarette burning in an ashtray
which had fallen onto the sofa and started a fire. Jimmy's mum was also upstairs
and as soon as she heard the smoke detector she told him that they must
get out of the house straight away. When they had got a safe distance
from the house Jimmy's mum then called the Fire Brigade by ringing 999
using a neighbours telephone. They could not use their own phone because
it was too smoky in the house.
When Jimmy's mum rang 999 she was
connected through to a lady at Fire Control who asked her for her name and address and if anyone
was still
in the house. The lady then said "Two fire engines are on their way
and would be there soon." She also told them not to go back
into the house. Within minutes two fire engines appeared with their blue
lights flashing and their sirens wailing. The sirens were so loud that
Jimmy had to cover his ears. The Firefighters got off the fire engines and
pulled a hosereel off. Two Firefighters had breathing apparatus on and entered the house with the hosereel . The
breathing apparatus made it
possible for them to go into smoke as the cylinders on their backs were
full of clean air. The Firefighters in breathing apparatus found the fire
and put it out using water from their hosereel.
Outside the house lots of people
gathered around to see what was happening .The police
came
to keep everyone back for their own safety. An ambulance arrived to
take care of anybody who may need to be taken to the hospital but thankfully
no one was hurt.
After the fire was out, the Firefighters checked
everywhere to make sure
it was safe for Jimmy and his mum to go back in. The smoke had made the
walls and furniture dirty and black but Jimmy and his mum were very pleased
that they had fitted a smoke detector as it had saved their lives and
stopped the damage to their house from being much worse.
The Firefighters then headed back to their station to carry on with their
training. On the way back they stopped at a fire hydrant to fill up their
fire engines with water ready for the next fire.
